Commonly asked questions regarding chiropody/podiatry

What is the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions, and the answer is they are both the same, but podiatry is a more modern name for the profession.

How should I cut my toenails?
Generally, toenails should be cut straight across. If you are struggling to cut your nails, or have problems with ingrowing toenails it’s best to seek professional advice from a chiropodist/podiatrist.

How can I stop my heels from cracking and becoming unsightly?
We can gently remove any excess skin around the heel area and advise on the best daily emollient to prevent further build-up.

Why are my nails becoming thick and discoloured and what can I do about it?
The two main causes of this condition are either a fungal infection of the nail or damage to the nail bed by an injury or trauma.
We can diagnose the cause, and advise you on the appropriate treatment.

What is a corn? Why does it hurt?
A corn is a small area of hard skin caused by friction or pressure that forms in a conical mass and points downwards into the deeper layers of skin.
This produces pain and irritation on underlying nerve endings. A corn will usually occur over a bony prominence.

How many treatments will I need?
Usually, one treatment will deal with most foot problems, but many people like to have regular foot maintenance every 6-8 weeks.
